Tamaral's Journey

OUR HISTORY

The history of the Ribera del Duero stretches back 2,500 years and is deeply intertwined with the vineyards and high-quality grapes that are native to the region. Wine is part of the life, character, and culture of the people of the area. And this is what has guided Tamaral since it was born 25 years ago.

The necropolis of the Vacace de Pintia archaeological site, in the municipality of Padilla de Duero-Peñafiel, is where the first reference to winemaking was discovered in the region. Wine residues, as well as ritual offerings, confirm the presence and consumption of wine in the region more than 2,000 years ago.

At the end of the century, in 1925, the harvest was regulated, but it was in the 15th century that the production of wine and its quality began to be controlled thanks to the Ordinances of Castile.

1980
The DO Ribera del Duero is bornA group of winegrowers and winemakers from the area backed the Denomination of Origin initiative. Their concern for the quality of the wines, together with the cultural and economic investment necessary to improve production standards, were key to the birth of one of the most prestigious Denominations of Origin in the world.On 23 July 1980 the first meeting of the Regulating Council of the Denomination of Origin takes place. At that time, the Council was acting on an interim basis. This was the first step towards its definitive constitution.

The government body that granted the Ribera del Duero the Denomination of Origin and approved its first Regulation. From that point, the wine region's thousands of years of history started on a new path towards a long future that remains to be discovered.
Official Denomination of Origin
Official status was granted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on 21 July 1982.
1997
The birth of Bodegas y Viñedos Tamaral The dream of Don Ricardo de Santiago, a native of Benavente (Zamora), came true in 1997 thanks to his efforts to promote a wine culture. The Golden Mile from the Ribera del Duero, in Peñafiel, witnessed the birth of Tamaral that same year. Initially the De Santiago Torío family, after many years of success in the textile sector, founded the wine company with a group of partners, including agronomists, or even the former president of the Oenological Station of Rueda, Pascual Herrera, who would in turn become the first winemaker of the winery. Later, Don Ricardo and Doña Carmen decided to take full control of the company and acquired 100% of it.
The history of Tamaral is intimately linked to the area of the river Órbigo, in Benavente (Zamora), the birthplace of Don Ricardo de Santiago. In fact, Tamaral gets its name from a woodland populated with ash trees on the bank river Órbigo. A place called El Tamaral. The first harvest took place in the year Tamaral was created, although cultivation actually began in the 90s. And so began of a life dedicated to wine.
1998
The first Tamaral Crianza goes on the market, from the 1997 vintage. It’s the winery's most iconic wine and the one that represents the characteristics of the terroir.  It is worth noting that the first wine to be launched on the market was called Tablares, a wine aged in oak barrels that won the prestigious Zarcillo de Plata.

2003
Finca La Mira’s first vintage.
In 2004 we launched Finca La Mira’s first vintage, a wine that is currently only produced in exceptional years. After originally planning to turn it into a Reserva, we ultimately decided to release it as an estate wine. This 100% Tempranillo variety comes from vines located at an altitude of more than 900 metres in Pesquera de Duero. Up until this point, Tamaral's entire business was located in one small building. That same year it was decided to expand the facilities, thanks to the growth that the winery had experienced in the first ten years of its history.

2018
Expansion of the winery.
We are expanding the facilities and modernising our systems. The new winery building will have a large tasting room, production area, cask cellar, warehouse, shop and the most modern technology to continue producing high-quality wines. This project will provide Bodegas y Viñedos Tamaral with optimum efficiency to produce its quality wines and allow it to welcome anyone who wants to get to know the winery.
2022
Tamaral will celebrate its 25th anniversary with the opening of the new winery. Two generations have been part of Tamaral's history and soon there will be a third one knocking on the door.

TAMARAL, YESTERDAY AND TODAY

The history of Tamaral cannot be understood without explaining why it was started. It was created to produce crianzas and reservas. Over the years, the winery has turned its focus to the production of estate wines, which follow more demanding DO protocols regarding its production and Tamaral's most important ingredient, the grape.

All wines are made with 100% tempranillo, a variety of red grape grown in the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region to produce full-bodied red wines from Spain, where the variety originates. Over the years we have developed various types of wines, adapting the vine to the different types of soils and plots that we have on our estate.
Awards and Recognition

Awards and honours have been garnered along the way. These have helped Tamaral become one of the most valued producers of the D.O.

The tender care of the vineyards and the pride we take in constantly improving, speak to Tamaral's commitment to keep on evolving without forgetting its most intrinsic traditions.
